Probation and parole are similar in some ways and different in others. Similar to yourself and your cousin; the same but different.
Probation occurs at the sentencing stage and is a court ordered alternative to prison. It may be offered in lieu of incarceration such as a suspended sentence or may include supervision of someone conditionally released from prison.
